Mi headphone: Complet Picture Review

Fellow MIUIers,

From the product launch of 15th January, came the Mi Headphones -  a masterpiece of its own category. Boasting hardware found usually on higher end models of rival companies, will the Mi Headphones be the must-have of any consumers? Let's unbox it first and do a simple review!

The Unboxing

Following the tradition of simplistic cardboard boxes, the Mi Headphones come in a white packaging. The one I received is a public testing model, as the headphones is yet to be sold to public.

Pushing out the slide-out drawer, one will be presented with a user manual and a black carrying pouch

Beneath the pouch is a black velvet bag, also for users to store the headphones.

Opening the black carrying pouch reveals the contents - the Mi Headphones

The complete set - Mi Headphones, 1.4M cable, a 3.5 to 6.3mm cable adaptor, dual jack adaptor for on-plane use and a pair of larger ear cups

The cable has a 3.5mm end that goes into an ouput and a 2.5mm end that goes into the headphones.

The First Impression

The gold-and-black colour combination definitely makes the headphone looks elegant, but is the sound on-par with what 1more and Xiaomi claims? We'll find out later.

Using leather for both earcups, it feels comfortable and soft after putting them on. Depends on users liking, the default earcup is a smaller on-ear while users can opt for the bigger over-ear. Giving users choice is always good. Removing the earcup reveals the prized 50mm Beryllium diaphragms.

The band is also covered in leather and a layer of cushioning, with a Mi logo sitting on top. Clearly of quality, the band sits and curves on one's head comfortably.

Most of the jacks come plated with gold to improve signal transmission. The 3.5mm to 6.3mm adaptor is covered in too much gold to my liking though.

Putting the headphones on, it clearly stands out of the crowd with the design and colours.

The Review

Let's start with my experience of putting on the headphones. While leather and proper cushioning promises a comfortable wearing experience, the on-ear earcups will press on and cause pain to the ears besides the heat. Using the over-ear earcups solves these problems, but adds too much bulk to it.

Now on to sound quality testing. While listening to The Piano Guys - Cello Ascends, the sound of cellos and piano are crisp and clear. The sense of space is there, but insufficient. Bass is a little low but acceptable as the song is not mainly about bass. Sound reproduction is exemplary at this price point, but not exactly screaming top notch as compared to other audiophile headphones.

Tested with Mi3, Dirac Audio: Off, Equilizer: Flat

After we try out instrumental music, it's time for some techno. Punchy bass lines and clear electric tones, all just nice and not overwhelming, can be heard on Dimitri Vegas, MOGUAI & Like Mike - Mammoth; DVBBS & Borgeous - Tsunami and BORGORE & SIKDOPE - Unicorn Zombie Apocalypse.

Tested with Mi3, Dirac Audio: Off, Equilizer: Flat

Conclusion

All in all, the Mi Headphones is a great piece of audio equipment if you're looking for a good hardware at a very low price: the punchy bass; responsive and clear highs; elegant design. Once again proving Xiaomi's philosophy of "Technology that everybody can enjoy" and 1more's great design capabilities.

Disclaimer: Using only a Mi3 for audio quality testing, the sound reproduction review might not be accurate as Mi3 doesn't utilize the headphones to the maximum. (I was going to borrow a Mi Note to try out, but then I returned it before I can actually test it)

Xiaomi working on to Make a Switch to iPhone Users to miui OS Easily

Xiaomi is already a well established manufacturer in China and other Asian markets. We are hearing a lot of news about the company as they are growing at an extremely fast pace. We may see a lot of comparisons to Apple, which company uses even in its official product launches. What is more, sometimes it is really obvious that this company has taken a lot of inspiration from Cupertino based tech giant.
Some call them the “Apple of China”, others predict them to be the global smartphones leader in about 5 years time. To further support these predictions, we have some news about some aggressive marketing tactics, which will be used directly at Apple. We saw that coming, just did not know the exact type of implementation.
Screenshot 2015-01-24 15.50.53
Xiaomi’s Media Development Director shared some thoughts about that. Right now it is obvious that Xiaomi, in order to allow iPhone users to make an easy transition to Xiaomi’s handsets, some hardware and software adjustments have been made.
The company stresses out its newest flagship – Xiaomi Mi Note, which has a dual-Sim dual-standby capabilities. One slot will be used for micro SIM cards, while another will be used either for Nano SIM cards or Micro SD cards for memory expansion. This hardware adjustment means that the iPhone users can make an easy transition without the need to replace their SIM card type and use it in Xiaomi’s device straight away!
In addition to this, Xiaomi development team is may be prepping an app, which will be placed directly into Apple’s App Store. This app will make everything easy to switch to Xiaomi: migrate data, sync contacts and will make easy merging and avoiding duplicate contacts.
Screenshot 2015-01-24 15.51.10
Finally, what about a trade in program? That’s right! Xiaomi’s Media Development Director is happy to say that that the company may soon launch the trade in program! You may be able to trade in any iPhone 5s or older iPhone, whether it is good or bad condition, and you will get a free Xiaomi Mi Note! What is more, The iPhone 6 or 6 Plus trade in will get you a free top of the line flagship Xiaomi Mi Note Pro!
It seems pretty obvious that the Xiaomi wants start ruling not only in China, but other markets as well. In addition, they definitely want to expand the circle or new and loyal customers. That being said, they do everything by the online marketing means. We say it is quite impressive.
Do you think that Xiaomi will strike at Apple seriously? Let us know in the social poll or in the comments section below.

Clash of Titan : Motorola Moto E(G2) vs Xiaomi Redmi 2 vs Lenovo A6000

If you wanted a good smartphone experience, spending close to Rs 20K was becoming a usual practice. But times seem to be changing and changing fast. We now can think of getting a mobile in a budget of Rs 6K and still get a decent product (for what it's worth).

Motorola deserves the credit for face lifting this space with Moto E, then Xiaomi followed suit and the rest followed this well-trodden path. How many times have we talked up these names lately? We've lost the count ourselves and there's no relief in sight, as the same names are readying themselves for affordable v2.0 products for the country (and others).

They clearly had the first-mover advantage and this had given them the leverage to make the next move with their Moto E 2nd generation, available across the globe. Xiaomi is very much expected to the same in the coming weeks and so will Asus and Micromax among others. Lenovo is another brand which has made itself available in this space which is why it's important to know, what's on offer and at what price. So, this should help you do that.

Brand Xiaomi Redmi 2 Lenovo A6000 Motorola Moto E (2015)

Dimensions 134 x 67.2 x 9.4 mm 141 x 70 x 8.2 mm 129.9 x 66.8 x 12.3 mm

As you can see, Motorola has somewhat lost ground on its peers like Xiaomi and Lenovo among others. The market has truly changed (for good) and it seems strange that what was initiated by Motorola is now being taken forward by other players. We can talk about the Lenovo A6000 for the time being, so it would be hard to discard the other two, just on the basis of hardware. We'll be giving our verdict very soon. Stay tuned

How to Remove Scratches from Phone

Is your phone affected with some minor scratches that is giving you trouble with visibility? Well, it needs some cleaning in a way that the scratches are completely removed. No, you don’t need to change your phone’s display or go for a scratch guard change. You just need to apply fine techniques and get your phone back in shape. Here are some of the tips to remove scratches from phone.
Note, you will need to power down your phone, remove the battery and seal the ports of your phone with tapes before you begin the process of cleaning.
Cleaning with Toothpaste
Your first tool to help you remove scratches is nothing but a tube of toothpaste. Don’t look so surprised. You just need to pull out a dab of the paste using cotton, and apply it along the areas that have received the scratches. When you begin rubbing gently, after a point you will notice the scratch is going off. Now using a dampened cloth, remove the toothpaste sticking to your phone.
Using Scratch Removal Creams
You will find a lot many car scratch removal creams like 3M scratch, turtle wax etc. that you can use to get rid of the scratches on your phone. Make sure you take the cream out on a soft cloth and then dab it across the screen of your phone.
Sandpaper Scratch Removal Technique
Well, this is not the generally opted technique for scratch removal, but it definitely works. Make sure you use the less abrasive varieties of sandpaper when using it to clean off the scratch. Don’t be too hard on your phone. Press the sandpaper gently along the scratches present on the phone. If you are too harsh or hard, you may damage the screen totally.
Use of Baking Soda
One of the best tips to remove scratches from phone is to use baking soda. Dilute baking soda in water to form a thick paste. Now take the paste on a piece of cotton and rub it along the phone’s display gently. Wipe with a dampened cloth, and see a scratch free phone.
Scratch Free Phone with Baby Powder
This is another interesting way of getting rid of the scratches from your phone. Add water to baby powder to make a thick paste. Now apply the paste along the scratches of your phone gently. Clean the powder with a dampened cloth and there your phone’s scratches have finally bid a good bye
These techniques have been tried and tested and are definitely applicable for minor scratches.

How to use MI phone when touchscreen is not responding??

Solution 1: USB OTG and Wireless Mouse Combo!

What you need: USB OTG cable and Wireless mouse (preferably a three-button scroll mouse)

So using a mouse, you can navigate and click anywhere on the screen much the same way you use your fingers to touch the screen.
Navigating is fairly easy, right click SELECTs items, left click work as a BACK button and middle click works as HOME key.

Some draw backs though:
- Typing is hell while using the mouse as you'd be clicking on each letter (unless you're using Swype keyboard or something similar, then typing becomes bearable)
- No multi-touch gestures here. Just plain, good 'ol fashion mouse swiping action.

Solution 2: Use a Mi-Key Oooops! Sorry. Wrong Mikey

Ahhh... there we go...

What you need:
- Mi-Key and Mi-Click app
Download Latest English Mi-Click App here: http://d-h.st/zwXg
So assuming you have a mi-key and MiClick installed, you can use the mi-key to simulate hardware keys or open/launch an application. here I used Mi-Key as a control panel/capacitive button. Then used the other clicks to open apps i usually use an need.

(Note: set your phone to go directly to homescreen from lock state. It'll save you the trouble of hooking up your mouse just to "swipe up to unlock")

You CAN'T do much with the Mi-Key alone though. it's very limited. but at least you have the power to open apps like the camera and shoot some pictures. or select the music player and entertain yourself to get your mind off your broken phone hehe.

Solution 3: Easy Touch
Download Easy Touch from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shere.easytouch.holo

My phone's touchscreen wasn't totally useless as there's still a small part that responded to touch. (mark with the yellow "X") So I tried to find a way i can use that small real estate of touch, went to Google play and there I discovered Easy-Touch.

Easy touch is somewhat like the Assistive Touch found on iOS, but takes it a step further by giving you full customization.
Here i set it up to have the same layout  as the phone's capacitive buttons. I also placed an Apps and Settings shortcut in case i need to access both.

You can really do a lot of things with Easy Touch and its customization is superb. I recommend you try it even if your phone is working perfectly. You might just like it.

BTW, you need ROOT access for some function of Easy Touch to work. You also have to set permission for pop up notification to "ALLOW"

Solution 4: MiPhone Manager

What you need:
- A PC (Windows XP or higher)
- A USB cable and MiPhone Manager
Download the latest English MiPhone Manager here: http://en.miui.com/thread-55321-1-1.html

Did you know that Mi Phone Manager comes with an emulator (or remote play window or an I-use-it-but-I-don't-know-what's-it-called-thingy) where you can control you're phone with your PC's mouse and keyboard?

Just install Mi Phone manager and connect your phone to your computer. Then just click on the "Play" below the image of the phone in MiPhone Manager. Wait for it to load and viola! You can now completely control your phone.

The good thing about this setup is you wont have any trouble with typing, since you're using a full keyboard and the mouse just makes navigating your phone a breeze! Of course there are cons to this setup too, such as you can't remove it from the PC while your using it or the PC's screen is not so high resolution compared to your phone so pictures or images you view onscreen are a bit blurry.

There are still other ways you can control your phone without the need for touch but I didn't get to try. Like connecting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse or if your capacitive buttons are functional and a part of your screen is still functioning, use One Hand Mode.
You can try to combine any of the Solution I mentioned above and see what works for you. But ultimately you would have to choose to have it fixed or replaced.
I really hope you guys wont come to the point where you'd suffer the same fate as my Mi3, but if you do, then you know you can still use your phone even without touch. Always remember the saying:

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

So don't skimp on protection such as protective case and tempered glass. It just might save your phone's life!
