Now the company has announced that it will invest nearly $205 in home appliance maker Midea, for 1.29 percent stake in its Chinese parent company.<br /> “The deal between Xiaomi Technology and Midea will see strategic cooperation between the two companies in smart home initiatives and electronic products,” read a statement from Xiaomi.<br /><br />The move is in-line with the smartphone giant's efforts to diversify its product line, further than its $150 air purifier, routers, blood pressure measurement kit, smart TVs, tablet and power banks. The company has been quite vocal about its plan to innovate in the hardware and smart home spaces.<br /><br />Xiaomi plans to “groom 100 startups so they become more than just manufacturing companies”, and the move to invest in Midea resonates with this ambition. Midea manufactures air conditioners, refrigerators, kitchen appliances and more, and unveiled its own smart home vision back in March this year.<br /><br />The Chinese appliance firm invested $2.5 billion into its smart home initiative, while the company's overall revenue for 2013 stood at something like $18.7 billion. Say Xiaomi, and most people think copy, not original. But as Xiaomi becomes better known in the West, that impression could change.<br /><br />Or at least that’s according to early Xiaomi investor<a href="http://www.forbes.com/profile/hans-tung/">Hans Tung</a> of GGV Capital. He sat down with me recently for an interview on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6_MXiobXa0">Silicon Dragon Talk</a> and shared his perspective on what makes Xiaomi an original.</span><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">He pointed to three key differentiators for Xiaomi:</span></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Customized features on the phones — users can change the color, language, layout, and app presentation<br />Social media feedback — fans and core users can contribute to the phone and change it on a daily basis</span><div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><span style="color: #444444; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Direct sales — Xiaomi is only sold online, eliminating the middleman, and thus helping to keep the cost low (about $300 for a smartphone). Marketing was nearly all word of mouth.<br /><br />What also separates Xiaomi apart from others is the drive of founder <a href="http://www.forbes.com/profile/lei-jun/">Lei Jun</a>. He’s on a mission to make a big impact in the world by helping to spread the use of affordable smart phones throughout the developing world.<br /><br />Having largely missed the Internet wave at his previous company <a href="http://www.forbes.com/companies/kingsoft/">Kingsoft</a> while <a href="http://www.forbes.com/companies/baidu/">Baidu</a> , Alibaba and Tencent have been cresting, Lei Jun is determined to catch the mobile Internet wave while the timing is good. It can produce 10,000 liters of clean air per minute and the 3 layer filter removes 99.99% of PM2.5 particles. If you’re on the mainland, it will set you back 899 RMB, that’s just under US$150, Xiaomi tells techcrunch.com that pre-orders for the product open at 6pm in China today — full sales will begin December 16. It confirmed there is no plan for a global release at this point.<br /><br />As purifiers go it looks pretty sleek. Xiaomi says the dual fan and four air duct system can produce 10,000 liters of clean air per minute, while it can filter out 99.99 percent of thedangerous PM2.5 air particles.<br /><br />As you’d expect, it comes with an accompanying remote control app which also sends alerts to your phone. For example, it will remind you when a replacement filter (199 RMB / US$32) is needed.</span></div><br /><br />
