Xiaomi is one of the fastest growing smartphone manufacturers in the world, I’d even go as far as saying they’re the number 1 OEM on that list. This company has sold 61 million smartphones in 2014, which is three times as much as they sold a year before. Xiaomi intends to sell 100 million handsets in 2015, which is quite a goal they set for themselves, let’s see if they can deliver. This Chinese OEM wanted to start the new year with a bang and have thus launched the successor to the Redmi 1S a couple of days ago, the Redmi 2.
The Redmi 2 is an extremely cheap smartphone, even cheaper than the Redmi 1S was, which is quite an achievement if you consider that Xiaomi not only improved its specifications, but the phone’s design as well. The Redmi 2 is smaller than its predecessor in every way imaginable, it’s shorter, narrower and thinner than the Redmi 1S. First unboxing of this handset appeared in China, if you’re interested in checking out what’s in the box and more importantly how the device looks like up close, take a look at the gallery below this article where you’ll find a bunch of Redmi 2 images which will show you every single piece of this device’s design.
The Redmi 2 features a 4.7-inch 720p (1280 x 720) IPS display (manufactured by Sharp) along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage which is expandable via microSD card up to 32GB. The handset is powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Snapdragon quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz which ships with an Adreno 306 GPU for graphics rendering. On the back of this handset, you’ll find an 8-megapixel camera (OmniVision sensor) and an LED flash next to it. 2-megapixel camera is located on the front side of this device for your selfies, video calls and what not. The device ships with Android 4.4 KitKat with Xiaomi’s MIUI 6 on top of it and a 2,200mAh battery is a part of this package as well. This is a dual-SIM, dual-4G handset which measures 134 × 67.2 × 9.4mm and weighs 133 grams. If you’d like to take a look at the full specs sheet, visit This Thread.
Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 smartphone costs only 699 Yuan ($113), which is a bargain for such a handset. The handset is already available for pre-order from QQ Tencent and will be available for purchase starting January 9 in China. No word on international availability just yet.
